watching tv in the digital age

this is where i admit that i am relatively retro when it comes to my tv viewing habits. i'm probably one of the few people left on the planet that doesn't have a netflix or a hulu subscription. i still prefer watching television shows on an actual television, as opposed to streaming through my laptop or via my nonexistent gaming system. a number of my friends have given up their cable subscriptions and, in some cases, their television sets, and now rely on streaming services (both of the paid and "omg this show just magically appeared on my hard drive lolz boom" varieties) to feed their tv show habits.

my acquiescence to technology is being a firm believer in the power of dvr. if all goes according to current plan, my next crashpad will have cable, but i will be sans dvr for the first time in years. right now i'm keeping up with "the newsroom" by watching it at the aforementioned crashpad via on demand. i'm amused by the #firstworldproblem-ness of it all. :P

i finished watching the first season of "house of cards" this morning. how'd i manage such a feat, considering that it's a netflix show and i just admitted to not having a netflix account? i rented the dvd set from the library. told y'all i was retro like that. i probably won't see "orange is the new black" until it comes out on dvd for the same reason.

there are a slew of shows that my friends are huge fans of that i've never watched, like "mad men," "breaking bad," "it's always sunny in philadelphia," and "the walking dead." actually, that last one's not entirely accurate, b/c i've seen maybe 2.5 episodes of "the walking dead," which is enough for me to be like "oh hell no i'm not watching that on a regular basis b/c ZOMBIES." i keep saying that i'll catch up with them at some point, and everyone says "oh you can just watch on netflix or hulu," like that's something i could do. i mean, i could, but i'm not. not yet. anyway.

y'know what i am doing, though? tweeting while watching television. i am all about that live-tweeting life, as evidenced here. if i'm watching via dvr or on demand or, in the case of "house of cards," via dvd, i'll still tweet about the show. i suppose in that regard, i'm not all that retro.
