seeing anita baker in concert: achievement unlocked

y'all.

it finally happened.

i finally saw anita baker in concert last night. i'd had tickets years ago for one of her shows, but it was cancelled. another tour took place while i was unemployed and could barely keep my phone on, so i had to skip that one.

when this farewell tour was announced, i vowed to keep enough money on hand to buy a ticket because there was no way i was gonna miss out again. funny story: before ravinia's season lineup was released, i kept saying that anita was going to play there. i just knew it somehow. when the schedule came out, i literally shrieked with joy: both because anita was part of the lineup and because my prediction was correct.

i got a little emotional before the concert started last night. i was there with quasi-landlord and another good friend of mine, and we still couldn't believe that this show was happening and we were there.

and then the introduction to "fairy tales" started playing and i burst into tears. i've written previously about my love for anita's compositions album (28 years old tomorrow! i know what i'm gonna listen to at work!) and it just hit me all over again. i found myself missing james, since he was the one who introduced me to the album. "fairy tales" is one of my favorite anita baker songs and i was finally hearing it live and in person for the 1st time. i was hanging out with a couple of people who were lifelines for me during that unemployed and technically homeless stretch, and...i was just so full, y'all. i was happy and sad and thankful and reflective and probably some other emotions i'm forgetting, all at once.

i'm so glad i got to experience this. part of me still can't believe it happened. but it totally happened, and i was there, and it was wonderful.
