so i finally got around to listening to india.arie's new album a few days ago. i was marginally excited b/c i'd gotten the opportunity to see her perform live a while back at a listening/preview party, and there were a couple of songs that i remembered liking, and i was right.
what i didn't realize until listening to the album, though, was that india.arie did a cover of "strange fruit," the song made famous and damn near iconic by billie holiday. thanks to the powers of teh interwebz, you can see/hear billie for yourself:
i was taken aback by india.arie's version b/c it sounded a little too upbeat for my tastes. i can't find a linkable version of the whole song, but you can listen to a snippet of it here.
i'm sure i was on the bus making all kinds of weird faces while this was coming through my headphones, b/c holy cognitive dissonance batman!
i mean, it's not a bad song per se, but when i think of "strange fruit," i don't necessarily think of a dance tune. that could just be me, though.
