thoughts on the nfl 100 commercial

i wasn't expecting an ad for the nfl to be my favorite commercial from sunday, but here we are, although i did shriek with delight during the stella artois spot when the dude showed up.

 
some thoughts, in no particular order, now that i've watched the ad at least a half dozen times today:

• marshawn lynch is still bereft of fucks to give and i still love him for it. also i have totally looked at a cake the way he did. sorry not sorry. 
• mike singletary! 
• barry and his spin move will never not be awesome. 
• ed reed can and will intercept your face. i want the jacket he was wearing. 
• fuck tom brady always and forever, amen.

#alldecembereverything, 2018 edition

it's the most wonderful time of the year! i didn't do much last year for my birthday because my brain was still broken after moving (again). i'm already looking forward to making up for that this year.

here's a list of things i'll be doing throughout the next month or so. i've provided links where possible. join me or, if none of these work out, let's plan to hang out soon.

wednesday, december 5: sip & shop with bourbon women chicago at binny's lincoln park. this has become one of my favorite ways to kick off my birthday month. $10 gets you lots of bourbon samples, and you'll get to hang with me and some of my fellow bourbon women members.

thursday, december 6: elmwood blues' 65th birthday. yes, that elmwood blues. leave it to the fine folks at nisei lounge to come up with more reasons for me to give them my money.

sunday, december 9: bears vs. rams on sunday night football. will probably watch this at nisei.

tuesday, december 11: authors on the lake with rick bayless at theater on the lake.

monday, december 17: happy birthday to me! i'll be back at nisei that evening accepting birthday drinks and other salutations. candy cane malört is back, so it's entirely possible i'll be drinking that if i haven't already at some point that weekend.

thursday, december 20: official launch party for two lane gems, vol. 2. if you've enjoyed theresa's adventures as the local tourist, then you'll probably dig her latest book.

guess what time it is? no, it's not peanut butter jelly time, but i completely understand if that's your first answer.

it's #alldecembereverything time! yes, ladies and gentlemen, my absolute favorite time of year is here! yes, i know december doesn't start until monday, but since quasi-landlord is taking me out for an early b-day dinner celebration on sunday, i figured i'd might as well post the celebration list in its current form so y'all can pick and choose which (if any) activities you want to participate in.

tuesday, december 2: "porgy and bess" at lyric opera. goldstar has discounted tickets available.

thursday, december 4: bears vs. dallas. thursday night football. #anyonebutdallas. it's entirely possible that i will end up watching this game at home, but on the off chance that a game watch gets organized, i'm putting it out there.

friday, december 5: i'm going to the one of a kind show at merchandise mart. discounted tickets available via goldstar, or you can try to find freebies via some of the participating artists. if you want to go on friday, let me know b/c i have an extra free ticket. first come first serve.

saturday, december 6: karaoke at third coast comics at 7pm-ish. i'll be there after i get off work. byob.

sunday, december 7: sweet honey in the rock at symphony center in the afternoon. also short rib dinner that evening with the fine folks at sunday dinner club. if you want in on the nomz, let me know & i'll forward the details to you.

wednesday, december 10: women employed event with roxane gay. if you haven't read "bad feminist" or "an untamed state" yet, you should do that. both books are amazeballs.

sunday, december 14: ladybrunch at angelina. 11am-ish, depending on when i can get a reservation. you should rsvp if you haven't already. if you didn't get an invite and feel that you should have b/c we're cool like that, please let me know so i can rectify this oversight.

monday, december 15: bears vs. saints monday night football. depending on the weather and my budget and other factors, i will either be at soldier field or at a bar for this game. stay tuned for updates as i get this one figured out.

tuesday, december 16: blackhawks vs. wild. i am hoping against hope that i will be at the united center for this game. if that falls through, i'll likely watch it at burger bar b/c $5 wings on tuesdays are delicious.

wednesday, december 17: happy birthday to me! lunch at primehouse as per my usual, then the david bowie exhibit at the mca (squee!) at 1:30. dinner and/or drinking later that evening tbd.

thursday, january 1: bilal at city winery. i bought discounted tickets via goldstar and you should too, b/c saving money is awesome.

yes, i know that last event isn't in december, but if you know me, then you know that i'm likely to continue this celebration until MLK day, if not longer.

--college football is back, you guys. i may or may not be excited about this...oh, who are we kidding? i'm totally excited about this! i'm wearing a northwestern t-shirt as i type, ffs. tonight's game isn't until 9:30 so i'm definitely planning a nap at some point. i still have a +1 for next week's home opener against syracuse, btw, so let me know if you're interested. eta: this ticket has been claimed.

--i'm also excited about pro football season starting. yes, i took off work so i can watch the bears season opener. yes, i switched days with a co-worker so i can watch northwestern/western michigan and bears/vikings. yes, i will have three consecutive sundays off (we're closed tomorrow for the holiday) for the first time in...hell, i think for the first time since i started this job a year and some change ago.

--i made some updates in the post i wrote about moms mabley the other night, so feel free to check that out again, or for the first time if you missed it previously.

--today is international bacon day, which would be a bigger deal for me if i wasn't already such a fan of bacon. mmm...bacon...

football's back, but it's not like i need to worry my pretty little head about it

so i was flipping through the september issue of family circle the other night when i came across this gem:

"Game Plan
Football season kicks off this month, but that doesn't mean you have to be glued to the TV screen. Let the guys get their game on while you organize a girlfriend get-together to celebrate National Rum Punch Day (September 20). Think of it as the BFF Bowl."

um, WHAT?

so of course i had to take to twitter to vent some of my outrage:

no response from family circle as of this writing. i mean, honestly. y'all know i love me some football, so much so that i'm typing this while the hall of fame game is on in the background even though i don't care about either team (#anyonebutdallas notwithstanding). and i definitely love football more than i love rum, which isn't saying much b/c i'm not that big of a rum fan, honestly, and if i were, i'd just get some of my fellow football-loving girlfriends together for a football and rum punch party b/c omg we're women and we like football and the next thing you know cats and dogs will be living together and down will be up and up will be sideways.

it's 2013, for fuck's sake. i have to hope that at least one family circle staffer read that copy and thought "hm, that's a little bit sexist," but decided not to rock the boat for whatever reason(s). i mean, it's bad enough that the nfl is trying to alienate its female fan base by restricting the size of bags that can be brought into stadiums, but now i need to give up on watching football altogether and go have a hen party so the guys aren't disturbed during that game? allow me to quote from "the wire" here:

it's one of the most wonderful times of the year

that's right, ladies and gentlemen. football's back, and i, for one, welcome the return of our gridiron overlords. now that i've pretty much recovered from saturday's northwestern game (seriously, guys - it's way too early in the season for us to be in cardiac cats mode, mmkay?), i can focus more of my attention on the bears.

if you're doing anything fun for opening day, or even if you're just gonna sit on your couch and drink lots of beer while watching lots of football, let me know. i took the day off of work on sunday just so i can watch the game. yes, i've become that girl. i've already figured out that i'll miss at least half of the season if i continue working sundays, which makes me sad. not opening day, though, and not the day before my birthday (b/c, seriously, bears vs. packers? happy birthday to me!) if i can help it. my plans for this sunday are still a bit up in the air, so, really, let's talk if you're plotting some sort of shenanigans and/or fuckery.
